One of the largest farming enterprises in Queensland's sugarcane-growing Proserpine region has come to market following the Faust family's decision to quit the local agricultural sector after more than 100 years.

The family's 3134-hectare beef and cane aggregation close to the Proserpine Sugar Mill stretches across 10 titles and includes 3119 mega litres of water entitlements, over 1100 hectares of cane production area and a carrying capacity of 500 breeders plus followers.

Originally from Scotland, the Faust family have been part of the Proserpine community since 1895 when the family established the Whitsunday town's local store.

In 1910 the Faust's became involved in cattle production and then the family expanded into sugar cane growing.

Such is the family's association with Proserpine that numerous roads, businesses and landmarks bear its name including Lake Proserpine, named after the family's patriarch and former mayor Peter Faust and the town's main supermarket.

Among the stories told about 87-year-old Mr Faust, the former mayor of Proserpine, is his convincing the late Sir Reginald Ansett, then owner of Hayman Island, to invest in the development of the Proserpine airport, now known as the gateway to the Whitsundays.

"Our farm has provided opportunities for multiple generations of our family and I am very proud of what we have achieved in agriculture", said Mr Faust.

"The substantial water portfolio, coupled with the Faust family's investment in water infrastructure and sustainable farming initiatives, feature in this property.

Proserpine lies 90 kilometres north of Mackay and 260 kilometres south of Townsville. Its origins date back to the 1890s, following the construction of the first sugar mill.
