Trafalgar Droughtmasters

Bulls that will lift your herd to new heights

“GRASSROOTS PRACTICALITY WITHOUT THE HOOP-LA FROM TRAFALGAR’ At this year’s DN.

Trafalgar Droughtmaster Stud first foray into Droughtmasters was more than 40 years with the purchase of bulls from the then famed Kengoon Stud at Kalbar in the Fassifern Valley for use over a Hereford cow herd. The resulting progeny were impressive. With the growth in popularity of the breed in ensuing years the Miles family decided give the stud world a go due to increasing demand for Droughtmaster genetics whilst maintaining the crossbreeding operation on a commercial basis. Initial Droughtmaster females were sought from the Gympie Female Sale and from Jim and Dorothy Crombie’s “Woodlyn Stud” also at Esk with Foundation Sires sourced from Kengoon Stud at Kalbar. For many years the Stud travelled the show circuit promoting their produce and the breed. Travelling to far flung destinations from the South East to the depths of the South West culminating at Brisbane Royal annually as well as to Rockhampton to participate in a number of Beef Expos. Doug’s father Gordon (an Accountant) was never confident as to the financial viability of the showing in relation to the bottom line and Doug’s response was always. “We are having a good time finding out”.

In 1995 the Miles family decided to make a move to the Studs current location “Glenfinnan” in the Morinish district west of Rockhampton. A predominantly Brigalow and softwood scrub Buffel block, Glenfinnan carries around 400 Stud and Commercial breeders with progeny turned off as either heavyweight feeders or as Jap Ox depending on prevailing weather and market conditions. Excess heifers are again either traded to feedlots or via direct consignment to meatworks in Rockhampton. The Stud aims to turn off around 30 commercially focused bulls per year via the paddock and the National Sale in Rockhampton. Bulls are in the main grown out without excessive interference under range conditions and are only supplemented should conditions demand and receive a 120 day preparation prior to auction. Again in 2017 Trafalgar will present a draft of 15 well grown, moderately conditioned, market relevant and ready for work young prospects for the markets competition.

All lots have had the relevant treatments and vaccinations, been semen tested and soundness evaluated.

Look for us on day 2 of the sale on Wednesday the 13th September. Lots 376 thru 390.
