EMERALD WEANER AND FEEDER FEATURE SALE
TUESDAY 4TH JUNE 2019
The dust has settled, the cattle have all sold. On behalf of the combined agents, saleyards representatives & the CHRC. We would like to thank everyone who came out on a chilly winters day to support the first Emerald feature sale for 2019. Congratulations to the vendors for presenting such a wonderful run of cattle, to the buyers, underbidders & saleyard staff for making this a truly memorable event. We trust everyone will be happy with their purchases and they all reach their destination safely.
An overall pleasing result amid trying conditions.
The Emerald combined agents first weaner sale for 2019 realised an offering of 4583 head. Most were drawn from local areas along with consignments from the likes of Jericho, Moranbah, Nebo & Koumala. Quality & presentation was of a high standard, however given the dry summer and late start to the season experienced by most producers.
Some vendors commented that their cattle didn’t have the overall weight and bloom or finish compared to previous years.
The feedlot industry was well represented and results for feeder cattle were likely above expectation.
Whilst it was pleasing to see some fresh faces & solid competition from within the restocking industry. It was still evident that some regular buyers (both local and from further afield) were absent due to persisting poor seasonal or patchy conditions in some areas.
In a stark contrast to most years where light cattle traditionally produce the highest prices and particularly the best overall average prices.
This year the heavier the cattle the higher the average price for both steers & heifers, including heifers 350 to 400kg producing the highest price among all female categories.
The best of the heavy feeder steers sold to 284c, most better lines selling from 270c to a/v 277c. Steers 350 to 400kg attracted interest from the feedlot and restocking sectors to peaked at 294c and a/v 270c. Weaner steers realised close to 50% of the overall yarding.
The best of the heavy weaner steers sold to an isolated 339c, with most other sales peaking around the 300c mark, to a/v 269c. Steers 200 to 280kg made to 300c to a/v 266c & a smaller sample of light steers under 200kg sold to a top of 290c to a/v 257c.
A limited number of heavy feeder heifers made to 242c to a/v 227c. Heifers 350 to 400kg produced some very good quality lines, the best rewarded to top the heifer market at 250c to av 226c. Buyers were a lot more selective in the heifers 280 to 350 kg, the heavier end peaking at 247c, to a/v 209c.
The best of the weaner heifers sold to 229c to a/v 188c & lesser numbers of heifers under 200kg reached 182c to a/v 163c.
