Correct the nation's beef shortage and drive down prices.
Indonesia's new trade minister reportedly wants to import up to 300,000 head of cattle to correct the nation's beef shortage and drive down prices.
Indonesia's new trade minister, Tom Lembong, reportedly wants to import between 200,000 and 300,000 head of cattle in the last quarter of this year to drive down prices.
Mr Lembong says he has been installed to restore stability to the market after his predecessor slashed cattle imports from Australia and sent the beef price soaring.
"We are ready to overwhelm the market so that those holding stock will think twice, because if we overwhelm the market, the price will go down and those holding (stock) will suffer quite great financial loss," he said, as quoted by Indonesia's Tempo news site on Tuesday. Source: AAP
