Karmoo Brahmans

Karmoo has been owned by the Faint Family for 97 years.

In 2017 Karmoo purchased 5 pure old Australian bloodline bulls and the complete Grazzi Brahmans herd, consisting of 60 purebred Australian Zebu Genetic cows, with a large percentage of the remaining 240 cows having 5/8 to ¾ Cherokee bloodline. These females fit ideally into the aim of the stud to produce cattle with breed character, temperament, tick resistance, fertility, calving ease, udder soundness, overall structural correctness and hardness

KARMOO BRAHMANS

Situated 45 klms south-west of Clermont on the Drummond Range, “Karmoo”, is entirely forest country with no soft scrub soils and is the core of our Brahman stud operation. It has been owned by the Faint Family for 97 years. An adjacent block, Eastern River, was acquired during the 1930’s, and is now used to run the majority of our commercial cattle.
In 1993, Karmoo Pastoral branched out, purchasing Marmordale, 12 klms from Clermont, where the company’s purebred steers and bulls are being grown out.

Current Principals Lance, wife Sonia, and daughter Kirstin, have been breeding purebred Brahmans for forty years. In 1979, 120 purebred grey females were purchased from the late Birt Tweedy of ‘’Annmore”, whose herd was established in 1963 when 8 full-blood stud females from the Lyndale and Waverley studs were brought. Only Cherokee, Allawah, and Avondale Sires were used in this herd. Continuing with this base, Karmoo Brahmans was born when additional foundation stud females were obtained from Orana, Garglen, Batandra, and Coweki studs. These cows also carried a large percentage of “Cherokee” and “Allawah” genetics. Since then, additional top quality females have been purchased, enabling the gene pool of the herd to remain flexible.

From the start predominantly traditional Australian Zebu type Brahmans were selected for sires based on optimum muscling and early finish for age, combined with high fertility and quiet temperament. These sires were purchased from Orana, Garglen, Mutation, Mt Miller, Coweki, Wandarri, and Batandra Studs. In more recent times, some imported blood has been introduced from M.C.L, Cambil and Alma Park. The most influential sires have been Orana Cee Cee, Wandarri Volvo, M.C.L. Raven and Alma Park Milkman.

Karmoo has always placed emphasis on its female line through constant culling and a careful selection of sires, with no priority put on high priced purchases. We strive to breed cattle that perform in any environment and encourage you to come and view them. All of the bulls are run on natural pasture and do not get any supplementary feed except for sale preparation. With this upbringing, the stud has an excellent reputation for the “doing ability of our bulls”. At the start of 2017, Karmoo purchased 5 pure old Australian bloodline bulls and the complete Grazzi Brahmans herd, consisting of 60 purebred Australian Zebu Genetic cows, with a large percentage of the remaining 240 cows having 5/8 to ¾ Cherokee bloodline. These females fit ideally into the aim of the stud to produce cattle with breed character, temperament, tick resistance, fertility, calving ease, udder soundness, overall structural correctness and hardiness. Fashion means nothing to us. We breed what we want and believe we should breed, with more emphasis being placed on breeding good females than bulls, as it is the females that are the core of our business. What we’re finding is that because of the genetic purity of our cattle, buyers are getting the effects of hybrid vigour even when using our bulls within Brahman herds. The bulls have longevity and high libido getting results over either a short or long term mating period.

Karmoo sells annually at the Big Country Sale, with paddock sales always available. Home bred bulls are used within the commercial herd on Eastern River, which is geared to produce grass-fed bullocks. We feel this gives us a balanced and realistic view in the ability of our cattle to perform in any commercial operation.

Please feel free to contact us for more information or arrange an inspection at Karmoo or Marmordale.

We are always happy to talk “cattle” with any one.
